Specialists in Korean Studies might wish to note that Warren Tsuneishi's tenure as Chief of the Asian Divison at the Library of Congress included the period when the Division's Korean-language monograph and serial holdings grew very rapidly and when the Korea Section was administratively established as a separate unit within the Asian Division.

Warren Michio Tsuneishi (1921-2011)

The Asian Studies community notes with deep regret the passing of Warren Michio Tsuneishi on January 29, 2011. Born in Duarte, California, on July 4, 1921, Dr. Tsuneishi served with distinction with U.S. forces in the Pacific theater during World War II and then went on to receive his M.A. (1948) and M.L.S. (1950) degrees from Columbia University and his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University (1960), where he wrote a dissertation entitled "The Japanese Emperor: A Study in Constitutional and Political Change". After serving as Curator of the Far Eastern Collection of Yale University Library during the first half of the 1960s, he worked from 1966 until his retirement in 1993 in a number of capacities at the Library of Congress, most notably as Chief of its Asian Division. Professionally active throughout his career, Warren Tsuneishi was not only the author of numerous articles and a monograph on the government and politics of modern Japan but also the joint editor of four Japan-U.S. conference proceedings on libraries and information science in higher education and of an edited collection of personal experiences in the Military Intelligence Service during the war against Japan. In addition, he was an active member and, at times, an officer of the Association for Asian Studies and its Council on East Asian Libraries, the Association of Research Libraries, the American Library Association, the International Association of Orientalist Librarians, the Asian Division Friends Society of the Library of Congress, the Japanese American Citizens League and the Japanese American Veterans Association.

Memories of Warren Tsuneishi during his decades of service to East Asian libraries and to Asian Studies throughout the United States as well as comments regarding his contributions, leadership, commitment to excellence and legacy will be included as part of a special article in the February 2011 issue of the Journal of East Asian Libraries, a publication of the AAS Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL). We cordially invite you to send your reminiscences and notes of appreciation for this tribute directly to the editor of the journal, Dr. Gail King, at gail_king at byu.edu. Because of a tight publication schedule, the editor must receive all contributions by Wednesday, February 9th.
