The page also links to the Internet Archive text of the book The Long White Mountain, or, A journey in Manchuria: with some account of the history, people, administration and religion of that country (Longmans, Green, and Co., 1888) published by James the following year.

This contains an account of what I believe is the first recorded ascent of Baekdu-san by westerners. It makes interesting, even amusing, reading.
