Rob Wilson, Professor of Literature, UC Santa Cruz:

*“Waking to Global Capitalism in Seoul: Situating Korean Studies in the
World.” *



This talk will explore linkages between American studies and Korean studies
in the context of globalization.

Rob Wilson first came to Korea as a Fulbright Professor of American
Literature at Korea University in 1982.  Following that visit, he published
a collection of poems entitled *Waking in Seoul* (U of Hawaii P, 1988),
which was co-published by Mineumsa Press in Seoul.  Some of these poems
were translated into Korean by Hwang Tong-gyu in Segye Munhak.



In 2004 Wilson was a Visiting Research Professor in the Department of
Cinema Studies, Korea National University of the Arts.  Following that
visit, he published, “Korean Cinema on the Road to Globalization” (*Inter-Asia
Cultural Studies*, 2009).



Rob Wilson is the author and co-editor of many important books that bridge
the fields of American Studies, Asia Pacific Studies, Globalization
Studies, and Cultural Studies:

-*American Sublime* (U of Wisconsin P, 1991)

-*Reimagining the American Pacific* (Duke UP, 2000)

-*Be Always Converting, Be Always Converted: An American Poetics* (Harvard
UP, 2009)

-*Beat Attitudes* (New Pacific Press, 2010).



Wilson also co-edited:

 -*Global/Local: Cultural Production and the Transnational Imaginary* (Duke
UP, 1996)

-*Asia/Pacific as Space of Cultural Production* (Duke UP, 1996)

-*The Worlding Project: Doing Cultural Studies in an Era of
Globalization*(North Atlantic Books, 2007).



Wilson serves on the Advisory Editorial Board of *boundary* 2, *Chaminade
