The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University invites applications for three PhD fellowships, as part of a project entitled ‘Garbage Matters: A Comparative History of Waste in East Asia’. The fellowships will be for four fulltime years, starting September 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.

‘Garbage Matters’ will examine household garbage in contemporary East Asia, and explore the historical shifts behind the transformation of practices related to the ‘production’ and disposal of waste since the Second World War. A comparative analysis, applied at two levels – intra-regional (between China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) and global (East Asia versus Europe) – forms the overarching framework of the project. The point of departure is the premise that garbage is not simply a ‘matter of waste’, but a social phenomenon reflecting modes of production and consumption, and dominant social values in a particular cultural setting. Working closely with Prof. Cwiertka and other senior academics, the PhD students will focus on Japan (sub-project A), South Korea (B) and Taiwan (C), respectively. They will map contemporary waste management policies and practices and identify distinctive features in their historical development in each society under scrutiny.
