Dear Colleagues,

I would be grateful if someone could tell me the YEAR in which Young Ho Choy -- presumably Ch'oe Yông-ho and Choe Yeong-ho -- passed away. This information does not appear to be available at Indiana University or at Boston University. Please see the annotated bibliographical entry for his doctoral dissertation (for publication in my annotated bibliography of doctoral dissertations on Korea, 1903-2004) that appears below. Thank you very much for your assistance at this time.

Best wishes,

Frank

CHOY, Young Ho (1899-?).
Reorganization of Private Education in Korea with Special Emphasis upon the Rural Secondary Phase. Indiana University [United States], 1930 (Ph.D. in Secondary Education, School of Education). Chairperson-Major Adviser: Isaac Owen Foster. 8, 139p. Abstract published in Franklin Parker and Betty June Parker, eds. American Dissertations on Foreign Education. Choy described and evaluated colonial Korea's educational system "in light of modern scientific education" and proposed its reorganization and reconstruction, taking the country's geographical, economic, industrial, political and social conditions into account. Focusing on "Whang Hai Do" (present-day Hwanghae-namdo and Hwanghae-pukdo/Hwanghaebuk-do)—a province "representative of Korea as a whole"—he called for the centralization of its educational system under a single authority, the appointment of a well-trained and experienced superintendent, the provision of proper educational facilities (buildings, grounds and equipment) and of free transportation for the students, the establishment of at least ten junior high schools and an agricultural college, the establishment of part-time schools and evening schools for those unable to attend all-day schools, and the creation of an educational research department. In addition to his doctorate, Choy earned a B.A. degree (1924) at Franklin College, a liberal arts college in Franklin, Indiana, and his M.A. in Theology (1925) at Boston University.
