*Polarization in Divided Societies: Korea in a global context*

The Asia Research Initiative, the Department of International Relations and
European Studies, and the Department of Public Policy at Central European
University (Budapest, Hungary) are pleased to announce the conference
‘Political, Social and Economic Polarization in Divided Societies: Korea in
a global context.’ The event is hosted by Central European University (CEU)
in Budapest and will take place on *2-4 September 2013*.

Calls for economic democratization dominated both presidential and general
electoral campaigns in South Korea in 2012. Income inequalities, low
employment rates among women, uncertain job prospects for the youth, raise
questions over the role of the large industrial conglomerates in Korean
society, its impact on social and economic relations and more generally
their role in the country's politics. At the same time, the country appears
divided along ideological, regional, and generational lines.

The organisers especially welcome papers addressing one or more of the
following issues:

-  sources of polarization in the Korean economy and society;

-  politics and business;

-  Korea and the global financial crisis;

-  revisiting the state-led development model;

-  emerging cleavages in Korean society;

-  crisis of the welfare system and new democracies;

-  protest, resistance and activism.

The conference aims to discuss such themes within a comparative and
interdisciplinary environment. The organizers plan to publish selected
papers as a special issue of a journal or as an edited volume.

The event seeks to increase the awareness of the importance of Korea and
Korean Studies in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. The areas covered
in the conference range from the humanities to the social sciences.
Pre-organized panel submissions are strongly encouraged.

*Submission of Proposals*

Proposals should be submitted via e-mail to koreaconf at gmail.com (as an
attachment in MS Word, RTF or PDF format). Please include:

1)      Name

2)      Institutional affiliation

3)      Title/position

4)      E-mail address

5)      A one-page CV

6)      Title of Paper (maximum 20 words)

7)      Abstract of Paper (maximum 350 words)

The working language of the conference is English.

The deadline for submitting abstracts is *20th May 2013*. Applicants will
be notified of the outcome of their submission by 31st May.

Full details of the program, registration and accommodation arrangements
will be available by 30th June.

The event is supported by the Korea Foundation and is organized within the
framework of the Global E-school in Eurasia in 2012, a project aimed at
developing a multi-university and multi-platform online real-time
curriculum in Korean Studies. Central European University is the first
European university to host a Global E-School, which brings together –
alongside CEU, ELTE in Budapest (Hungary), the University of Vienna
(Austria), the University of Paris Diderot, La Rochelle (France), the
University of Bologna (Italy), University of Turku, Aalto University
(Finland),  the Middle East Technical University in Ankara (Turkey), the
Tajik State University of Commerce in Dushanbe (Tajikistan), the American
University of Central Asia, International University of Central Asia in
Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan) and
Petrozavodsk State University (Russia).
