Dear Mr. Shulman,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding Princeton University graduate
student alumnus Kei Wong Chung. I have examined his graduate file, and it
states that he wrote his dissertation under the direction of Professor
Philip K. Hitti. The name of the department in which he earned his degree
was Oriental Languages, according to some forms found in his graduate file,
but I also consulted a general catalogue from the same time period, and I
believe, based upon this source, that the full name of the department is
"Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures." I hope that this
information helps you create a definitive entry and please feel free to
contact me if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Shulman,

I searched through the graduate student files for the names you provided.
Below is a summary of these results. For all but one individual, both
bachelor's and master's information was found....According to our
records, all individuals are still living, except for Kei Won Chung....

CHUNG, Kei Won (1902-1986)
Ph.D. in Oriental Languages and Literatures, Princeton University, 1938
Th.M., Princeton Theological Seminary, 1935
B.D., San Francisco Theological Seminary, 1934

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

AN INQUIRY FOR WHICH I AM CURRENTLY AWAITING A RESPONSE

Dear Colleague,

CHUNG, Kei Won (1902-1986)
Ph.D. in Oriental Languages and Literatures, Princeton University, 1938

A question has arisen regarding Dr. Chung's YEAR OF BIRTH. I currently have 1902 on file, but another source states "March 16, 1899-June 17, 1986" and yet another states that he was born in 1898.

What, may I please ask, do the official records at Princeton University state?

In addition, do the Archives at the Mudd Library also contain any information regarding Dr. Chung's higher education IN KOREA? I understand that he earned the degrees of Bachelor of Divinity [B.Div.] (1934) at San Francisco Theological Seminary and Master of Theology [Th.M.] (1935) at Princeton Theological Seminary, but did he also study at one of more institutions of higher education in Korea before he came to the United States? If yes, at which institution(s) did he study, what degree(s) did he earn, what was/were his academic majors, and in which year(s) did he earn his degree(s)?

Thank you very much in advance for your kind assistance in the days ahead. It will be greatly appreciated.

With my best wishes,

Frank Joseph Shulman

I will be happy to share with the list the response that I receive from Princeton -- presumably sometime later this month.

Best wishes,

At least, Kei-won Chung, PhD of Princeton cannot be a woman, simply because it was not until 1961 that a female student was enrolled as a degree candidate in Princeton.

Princeton Alumni Database does not give much information on him, but indicates that:
He was class of 1938 (Oriental Studies Department) and passed away in June 1986.
