Dear Heinz,

Thank you so much for this -- super helpful material!  It looks particularly good for getting non-specialist students interested in Korean comics. Truly appreciate you sharing all of this!

All best,
Joan

Hi, Joan (and other interested parties),

In addition to David's recommendations (that 30-page translation of Hong Gildong is really quite
good!), go to my website and look on the "Comics & Manhwa" link. You'll find a bunch of links
to excerpts from various DPRK comics as well as my introductions and essays. There's also
a gallery of some of the covers from South Korean comics I translated when I was in grad school.

And here is a link to pdfs of my long-ago translation of a Korean comic book adaptation of
Wu Cheng-en's Journey to the West:

I'm currently doing a blog "case study" for the comic class I teach, and I suppose you could
technically construe it as a Korean comic book, since I am classified as kyopo these days.
57 pages are "thumbnailed" here. If you want, I can send you the first 12 pages that are
finished.

Kim Dong-hwa's "Colors" books can be found here:
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/the_color_trilogy/
(as well as lots of other manhwa if you're looking).
I have a short essay on Kim I can also send you if you're interested.

Cheers,
HIF

Heinz Insu Fenkl's article and translations "Inside North Korea" in Azalea Journal of Korean Literature & Culture Vol. 2 has some references, including an excerpt from "Great General Mighty-Wing."  The current issue, Vol 6, has an intro and translation of Shin Dong Wu's serial cartoon Hong Gildong.  Volume 5 has an amazing series of drawing by Choi Ho-Cheol, "Images of Seoul."

Can members recommend English-language materials on Korean comics suitable for undergraduates? John Lent's writings have been mentioned, but are there others?
