South Korea's Rise: Economic Development, Power, and Foreign Relations

Korea Program Seminar, Stanford University

Uk Heo, Professor of Political Science, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Monday, April 27, 2015

12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m

Venue: Philippines Conference Room, Encina Hall, 3rd floor, East, Stanford University

In the 1950s, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Its international trade was minimal and foreign ties were also limited. As its economy grew dramatically in the following decades, South Korea’s relationship with the outside world also developed tremendously. Seoul normalized relations with both Moscow and Beijing, and its relationship with the United States has evolved into more of a partnership from the previous patron-client relationship. Dr. Heo will introduce a new theory that explains the connection between South Korea’s economic development and its foreign policy.

RSVP required by April 23
