Dear Colleagues,
We would like to announce the establishment of EnviroLab Asia at the Claremont Colleges (Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Scripps, Pitzer and Pomona). EnviroLab Asia is a new initiative for the study of environmental issues in East and Southeast Asia that promotes research between the humanities/social sciences and the sciences. In particular, it will be carrying out research on environmental issues on the Korean peninsula. With university partners in Korea, EnviroLab Asia will be studying issues related to contested infrastructure and ecological development and human agency and social organization/ transformation, especially related to military demands (such as the missile defense system in Seongju and the navel base in Cheju) and rural and urban ecology (such as farms and the ecology near the DMZ). In addition to Korea, EnviroLab Asia will also look at environmental issues in Thailand, Japan and China.
EnviroLab Asia is generously funded by a $1.4 million grant from The Henry Luce Foundation and the Claremont Colleges. Components of EnviroLab Asia include faculty cross disciplinary research labs, support for faculty and student publications, Clinic Trips, conferences, workshops and course development/redevelopment grants.
For more information, please see our website, http://envirolabasia.claremont.edu. Also, Asia Now, the blog for the Association for Asian Studies, just published a story about EnviroLab Asia: http://www.asian-studies.org/asia-now/entryid/73/envirolab-asia-a-liberal-arts-approach-to-studying-environmental-issues-in-asia.
Please contact us if you have any questions. Also, we would be happy to talk to anyone about collaborating on any current and future projects.
Sincerely,
