2018 Monash PhD Position in KoreanStudies
Faculty/ Portfolio: Faculty of Arts, School of Languages,Literatures, Cultures & Linguistics
Location: Clayton campus, Monash University

Remuneration: Thesuccessful applicant will receive a Faculty of Arts Research Living Allowance. Currentvalue: $27,353 p.a. 2018 full-time rate (tax-free stipend); (indexed plusallowances as per RTP/MGE stipend conditions: http://www.monash.edu/graduate-research/future-students/support/scholarship-conditions-of-award)for up to three years full-time study.
TheOpportunity
A new PhDposition is being sought in the Korean Studies doctoral program.This position is being created with financial support from the AKS (Academy of Korean Studies) CoreUniversity Program for Korean Studies.
A PhDstipend is being offered for a suitable candidate to pursue studies in theKorean Studies programme. The funds canbe used to offset tuition costs and/or to cover living expenses. Students maybe eligible for further support, please contact Dr Andy Jackson for details.
Applications for Korea-related doctoral projectsinclude, but are not limited to, pre-modern or modern history, rebellion inKorea, literature, cinema and media studies, cultural studies, linguistics, secondlanguage acquisition, pragmatics, sociologyof media, overseas Koreans, religion, ethnicity and sociology. These areasreflect the research interest of Monash University Korean Studies staff.
The successful candidate will join a growing anddynamic Korean Studies team with a high-level research profile and significantteaching experience. At Monash University Korean Studies, we are dedicated tohigh level research on Korea and Korean related areas. We are committed to developinginnovative and engaging teaching approaches using the latest technology andfostering an environment in which learning and skills acquisition continuesoutside the classroom. We aim to provide maximum support to our students andnurture a dynamic environment in which students’ interest in Korea and Koreanculture can flourish. Extra-curricular activities include seminars, workshops,conferences, international exchanges, Korean language competitions, trips toKorea, films, discussions, vocational experience schemes and links tobusinesses.

The successful applicant willhave an excellent academic track record in research and an excellent command ofboth English and Korean.

Candidates will be required tomeet Monash entry requirements which include English-language skills.Scholarship holders must be enrolled full time and on campus.
Successful applicants will beexpected to enrol by 1 April 2018. There may be some flexibility as to the dateof commencement.

Submitan Expression of Interest
EOIs shall comprise:
- A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant’s suitability
- A research proposal not exceeding 5 pages in length
- A curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works
- A full statement of academic record, supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
- Contact details of two academic referees
- Evidence of English-language proficiency (international applicants only)
It is expected that applicantswill have been in discussion with Dr Andy Jackson prior to submission of the EOI.
EOIs shall be sent, preferably inthe form of a single attachment to an e-mail, to Ms Merci Ikeda, GraduateResearch Admissions Officer, Faculty of Arts, at the following e-mail address: Merci.Ikeda at monash.edu.
Shortlisted candidates will beinterviewed, over Skype if necessary. The interviews will be conducted inEnglish.
