GW 한국학 연구소 창립:
미국의 수도권에서 처음으로 생기는 한국학 전문기관

2017년 1월 12일 한국학의 유래가 깊은 조지워싱턴대학에 한국학 연구소 (GW Institute for Korean Studies)가
정식으로 개소된다. 이는 현재 한국학 증진에 막대한 공헌을 하고 있는 한국학중앙연구원의 백만불에 가까운 보조로 설립하게 되었다. 미국의
수도 워싱턴지구뿐 아니라 미 전역, 나아가 세계의 전문 한국학 연구와 활동의 핵심지로 발전하여, 대학 내 여러 곳에서 진행되고 있는
한국학의 여러 분야 간 협력과 상호강화를 지양하여 튼튼한 기반을 세우는 것을 목적으로 하며, 학문적으로, 실질적으로 여러 가지 한국 연구,
한국 알리기와 중고등학생의 교육까지 포괄하는 활동을 시작한다. 동 연구소는 그동안 아시아학의 중추가 되어 한국학을 계속 지양해 온 GW의
국제대학 안에 있는 Sigur Center에 자리를 잡게 된다. 소장은 김지수 한국국제교류재단 역사학 기금교수이며, 현재 안식년이어서
역사학과의 Gregg Brazinsky 교수가 임시 소장을 맡고있다.

한국학연구소 개소식은 국제대학 7층에 있는 City View Room에서 거행된다. 거의 온종일 하는 대대적인 이 행사에는 Steven
Knapp GW  총장의 개소  선언 연설에 이어 William Adams NEH 원장과 안호영 한국대사, 김성곤 한국문학번역원장,
한국국제교류재단 (Korea Foundation) 이시형 이사장 (이 시연 KF 워싱턴 소장 대독), 한국학 중앙연구원 (Academy
of Korean Studies) 이기동 원장 (R. Richard Grinker교수 대독), Douglas Shaw 국제책략
교무부처장과 Reuben Brigety 국제대학학장과 Ben Vinson III 문리대학장 등 여러 귀빈이 축사할 예정이다.

개소식에 이어 짧은 음악 프로그램과 오찬이 있으며, 곧바로 개소 기념 특별 학회로 들어간다. 세계 각국에서 활동하는 중견 문학 학자들과
활동적인 젊은 학자들, 그리고 세계가 사랑하는 문정희 시인이 한국에서 와 참석하는 국제회의다. 6시까지 진행될 이 학회는 “디아스포라”
라는 개념을 두고 한국 문학을 고전에서부터 현대문학까지 총 정리해 보며, 제목은 “한국인문학과 한국 Diaspora”이다. 개소기념학회는
미국의 저명한 국립인문학연구원 (National Endowment for the Humanities)원장의 후원으로 가능하게 되었다.

GW와 한국은 깊고 오랜 관계를 지켜왔다. 졸업생 중 가장 유명한 동창은 한국의 독립운동가자 개혁을 한, 1892년에 GW 의과 대학을
나온 서재필 박사, 1907년 GW 학부를 졸업한, 현대한국의 초대 대통령 이승만 박사가 있으며 최근 노태우, 이명박 대통령이 GW에서
명예박사를 받았다. 현재 1,000명 이상의 GW동창이 한국에 살고 있으며 국제 동창 중의 가장 큰 숫자다.

GW는 1983년 워싱턴지구에서 최초로 한국어를 정식과목으로 제공한 후, 계속 김영기 교수의 한국학에 대한 끊임없는 노력 및  지도자적
역할과 더불어 대학 내 국제대학, 문리대학, 나아가 경영대학, 교육대학 등에서의 학생, 교수, 행정부의 한국에 대한 관심과 보조로 지난
30년 동안 눈부신 발전을 이루었다.

GW는 한국국제교류재단의 보조로 2000년에 최초로 역사학 기금 교수 자리 확보 후, 현재 정치학, 인문학을 포함한 세 분야의 한국학
기금 교수 자리를 확보하여 한국 외에서 제공되는 한국학 프로그램에서 가장 원만하고 학문적인 프로그램을 제공한다. 한국법역사전문가이며
한국학 연구소 소장인 김지수교수는 2010년 국제교류재단 역사학 기금 교수로  임명되어 지금까지 종사하고 있고, 2002년에는
국제대학에서 한미, 한중관계 전문가이며  한국학 연구소 부소장으로 임명되고 현재 임시소장을 맡고 있는 Gregg Branzinsky교수를
채용하였다. 2012년에는 한일 비교정치 전문가 Celeste Arrington교수가 두 번째로 한국교류재단 한국 정치학 기금교수로
임명되었다. 그 외 주요 한국학 교수로 자폐증의 대가이며, 아프리카 연구을 계속하는 동시 한국자폐인 연구,  북한 문제 연구로
유명한 Richard
Grinker 인류학 교수, 언어학자로 한국 언어 문화 역사 등 미국에서 한국학 뿌리 내리기에 오래 종사한, 전 동아시아어문학과장 김영기
(Young-Key Kim-Renaud) 명예 교수, 그리고 언어학자로 언어교육에 종사하고 있는 박미옥 조교수가 있다.

GW문리대, 동아시아어문학과, 시거센터, 직물박물관과 한국국제교류재단, 한국대사관과 워싱턴문인회가 후원하는 이 개소식과 개소기념학회는
누구나 참석할 수 있고 무료다. 그러나 장소가 제한되어 있으므로 일찍 등록하는 것이 바람직하다.

*New Institute for Korean Studies Launched at GW The First of its Kind in
the Nation’s Capital Area*

On Thursday January 12, 2017 the George Washington University will launch
the GW Institute for Korean Studies, created through generous support from
the Academy for Korean Studies. The Institute will be housed in the Sigur
Center for Asian Studies in the Elliott School of International Affairs.
The interim director of the Institute is Prof. Gregg Brazinsky, until June
2017, when the Director designate, Korea Foundation Associate Professor
Jisoo Kim, returns from her sabbatical.

The inaugural event will begin at 10:30 AM in the City View Room of the
Elliott School, 1957 E. Street, NW, 7th Floor. It includes an official
opening ceremony by GW President Steven Knapp, followed by a ribbon
cutting, and music performance, and luncheon.

Congratulatory remarks will be delivered by National Endowment for the
Humanities Chairman William D. Adams, South Korean Ambassador Ahn Ho-Young,
and other dignitaries including: Academy of Korean Studies President Lee Ki
Dong, Korea Foundation President Sihyung Lee, Literature Translation
Institute of Korea President Seong-Kon Kim, Associate Provost Douglas Shaw,
and Deans Reuben Brigety and Ben Vinson III.

A special inaugural conference made possible by the generous support of the
NEH, focuses on “the Korean Humanities and the Korean Diaspora,” will bring
many of the world’s most distinguished experts on Korean literature as well
as the beloved South Korean poet Moon Chung-hee to campus. It will take
place from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the City View Room.

GW’s relationship with Korea is long and significant. It’s most famous
Korean alumni include Soh Jaipil, a renowned leader in the Korean
independence movement who graduated from Columbia Medical College (now GW’s
School of Medicine and Health Sciences) in 1892, and Syngman Rhee (B.A.
1907, a Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, 1949, and an honorary
doctoral degree in Law, 1954), the first President of the Republic of
Korea. Recently, GW presented Roh Tae Woo, the 13th President of the
Republic of Korea (1988-1993), with an honorary degree in 1989. Lee
Myung-bak, the 17th President of the Republic of Korea (2008-2013) with an
honorary Doctor of Public Service in 2009. More than 1,000 GW alumni—the
largest concentration of GW alumni outside of the United States—reside in
the Republic of Korea.

In 1983 GW became the first university in the Washington, DC Metropolitan
area to offer Korean language courses as part of its regular curriculum.
Under the leadership of Professor Young-key Kim Renaud, the Elliott School
for International Affairs, and the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences,
Korea related research and course offerings at GW have grown dramatically
during the last three decades.

In 2000 GW appointed the first Korea Foundation Professor of History.
Professor Jisoo Kim, a leading expert on Korean legal history and director
of the new institute, has held this position since 2010. In 2002, the
Elliott School recruited Professor Gregg Brazinsky, a specialist on
U.S.-Korean and Sino-Korean relations, who will serve as associate
director. In 2012 GW hired Professor Celeste Arrington, a specialist in
comparative politics focusing on the Koreas and Japan, to fill a second
Korea Foundation chair in Political Science. Other core faculty members of
the institute include: Richard Grinker, a renowned expert on autism; and
Miok Park, a respected theoretical linguist. Thanks to a third matching
grant from the Korea Foundation and the fundraising efforts of Professor
Kim-Renaud, GW will establish a new endowed professorship in Korean
Literature in the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department by 2018.

The mission of the GW Institute for Korean Studies (GW-IKS) is to
consolidate, strengthen, and grow the existing Korean studies program at
GW, and in the greater D.C. area. The resources of the institute will be
used to establish a lecture series, annual signature conference, and works
in progress seminar while providing support for the popular Hahn Moo-Sook
Colloquium in the Humanities. It will also assist in recruiting new
graduate students interested in Korean studies.

The opening ceremonies and conference are also supported by GW’s Columbian
College of Arts and Sciences, East Asian Languages and Literatures
Department,

Sigur Center, Textile Museum, and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in
the USA, the Korea Foundation, and the Korean Literary Society of
