Dear colleagues,

Victoria Ten (Leiden University) wishes to propose a panel provisionally
titled “A Mountain as a Body of a Nation” at the forthcoming AKSE 2019
conference in Rome http://94.136.40.103/~koreanstudies.eu/?page_id=54. The
mountain as such is just one example of national embodiment. The scope of
our research might include coasts, rivers, urban spaces and other elements
of the landscape. I would like to build an inter-disciplinary panel.
Besides anthropology and religious studies, our scope might include
geography, ecology, literature, history modern and ancient, archelogy,
political sciences or any other field of study. Other anthropologists are
welcome, of course.

In a sense, the panel proposal for AKSE 2019 could be considered a
continuation of our panel at AKSE 2017 titled “Mt. Paektu in North and
South Korea: a Living Tradition”. The presenters of our AKSE 2017 panel
have recently concluded a publishing contract for a book based on this
panel. Equally, I plan to develop our AKSE 2019 panel proposal into a book.
AKSE 2017 panel and a book based on it are more of an introductionary
character, suggesting that Mt. Paektu is a living tradition and reviewing
concrete examples of this through the lens of history, anthropology, art,
religion and politics. Our panel proposal for AKSE 2019 will constitute a
deeper analysis into a concept of national embodiment, material or
metaphorical, ecological or visual, with a more precise and developed
methodology. To discuss this please contact me at

Sincerely,

Victoria Ten
