NORTH KOREA IN PHOTOGRAPHS (Nov. 21st 2018 - May 20th 2019)
An exhibition of the department Korean Studies at the University of
Hamburg with photos by the geographer Eckart Dege and the photo artist
Koo Bohnchang
The exhibition 조선민주주의인민공화국 NORTH KOREA IN PHOTOGRAPHS gives an
impression of a country frequently shrouded in conjecture. The
photographs show places from the Demilitarized Zone in the centre of
the Korean
peninsula up as far as the border region with China in the north.
Some of these places are currently in the international news. Others
illustrate how the cultural heritage of pan-Korean history, mythology
and historical sites interacts with today’s Chuch’e ideology. The Kim
family recurs repeatedly in them in the most diverse contexts.
Prof. Dr. Eckart Dege (b. 1942) went on a total of nine group tours
and excursions to North Korea with students of the Geographical
Institute at Kiel University between 1988 and 2008. During these stays
he built up a collection of photos which is extremely valuable as
documentation and includes motifs outside the normal tourist itinerary.
The South Korean photo artist Koo Bohnchang (g. 1953) studied, among
other subjects, Graphic Design and Photography at the HAW Hamburg and
is Professor for Photography and Video at Kyungil University.
His work, in which he often confronts the Korean past, can be seen in
museum collections and at exhibitions internationally.
Best wishes,
Yvonne Schulz Zinda
