Title: Challenges of maintaining themother’s language: Southeast Asian marriage-migrants and their mixed-heritagechildren in South Korea

 Abstract

This talkwill examine the language use of Southeast Asian marriage-migrant mothers inrural South Korea with their mixed-heritage children, and the challengesrelated to heritage language (HL) transmission. Drawing on in-depth interviewswith ten women, the study finds that they encountered multiple obstacles whenattempting to teach the HL to their children due to conflicting languagepractices and ideologies within their three-generation families. The Koreanfamily members regarded HL learning as a barrier to the children’s success anddiscouraged the development of their bilingual and bicultural identities. Moreover, the migrant women viewed themselves as incapable mothers when theyfelt they could not support their children academically. The mothers’ emphasison the children’s academic and social success led them to promote Korean athome. Implications for HL education will be discussed.
