It is with a heavy heart that I send this announcement of the passing of
Lee Young Mi (이 영미), a scholar of North Korean literature who originally
hailed from the city of Kwangju. Her son informed me of her death last
Wednesday, July 8. She had been ill for quite a while, and in the hospital
for about one month prior to this time. Dr. Lee was a rather active scholar
before illness weakened her. She taught classes at Kyonggi University in
Seoul, among other places. A prolific author, over her career she managed
to complete four monographs and numerous academic articles, all in Korean.
She also organized panels and presented papers at academic conferences in
North America (AAS), Europe (AKSE), and Japan (ASCJ). Right up to the time
she was hospitalized Dr. Lee was taking classes to improve her English and
Japanese language ability. I found her to be very generous with her time,
be it to copy materials that contributed to my research, or to send needed
items to help me settle into my life in Korea from this past April. She
will be missed dearly.
