Dear all,

I write to draw your attention to a very recent article by Rick McBride on the dramatic changes in belief between the sixth and twelfth centuries about the identity of Silla's founder. He draws on evidence from early written sources—including, importantly and tellingly, epigraphy—to trace in critical historical perspective the repeatedly shifting official understanding of who founded the kingdom. I rank the article as a "must read" if you have an interest in early Korea or the historiography pertaining to it.

Richard D. McBride II, "Making and Remaking Silla Origins", Journal of the American Oriental Society, v. 140, no. 3 (2020), pp. 531–548.

Enjoy,

Jonathan
