Dear sir or madam,
The Center for International Affairs at the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) would like to share videos of The 83rd Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting which was held on September 23rd, 2020. The Societas Koreana program is an internationally recognized lecture program led by experts in each field and the lecture covers a variety of topics from Korean art and culture to Korean history.
The 83rd Societas Koreana lecture regarding the topic “Translating Parasite: The Many Challenges of Film Subtitle Translation” was given by Prof. Darcy Paquet(Busan Asian Film School) who is widely know as a film critic and a translator of the English subtitle for the Korean film ‘Parasite’ by Bong Joon-ho.During his lecture, Prof. Darcy Paquet introduced an effective translation method by using the subtitles of the movies “Parasite” and “The Himalayas” that he translated himself as examples. He compared the translation of movie subtitles to a tailor, and said that the more the movie subtitles fit the actor’s feelings, the more the audience can enter into the emotions.
To learn more about Professor Paquet’s lecture and check the special interview of his backgrounds and passions for Korean movie, please visit our YouTube channel. We believe that the lecture video will help you understand how various Korean movies were translated.
