The inaugural Korean Studies Annual Symposium at the University at Buffalo (UB), "Genre, Gender, and Language in Korean Film and Drama," invites submissions that interrogate and expand our understanding of Korean film and drama in regards to the intersections of gender, genre, and language. This interdisciplinary symposium aims to bridge theoretical frameworks, concepts, and research across fields. From blockbuster and acclaimed Bong Jong Ho's horror and science fiction film Parasite, to the feminist politics of auteur Yim Soon Rye, the popularity and epistemology of zombie K-drama, and critical poetics on experimental films of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, the symposium seeks to add to the ever growing field of Korean cinema and television studies and to envision new horizons.

Drawing from the expertise of our keynote scholars Dr. Nam Lee, Dr. Joseph Jeon, and Dr. Molly Kim and other key scholars in the field, the symposium will explore these critical questions and inquiries and generate conversation on future directions in Korean film and television studies.

Guiding questions include: How have Korean filmmakers utilized genre to shape or intervene in notions of gender? What is the role of language, such as subtitling and transpacific distribution, in the reception of Korean cinema and television transnationally? How does Korean cinema and drama shape new directions in media studies, Korean Studies, ethnic studies, gender and sexuality studies, and other fields?

Paper or panel topics may include but are not limited to the following:
* The politics of gender and genre (Horror/SF/Fantasy) in Korean film and drama
*            Subtitling practices across borders
* Interventions in cinema and television studies
*            Parasite and Hollywood systems
* Kpop, Korean food, Korean film: The Changes of Hallyu
* Squid Game, K-Drama, and Netflix
* Intersections of new media, literature, and Korean film and television
* Korean American and Korean film studies
*            Korean stardom
* The gaze in Korean cinema and drama
* Environmental issues in Korean film
* Queer and feminist film theory
*            Korean auteur theory
* Avant garde Korean diasporic film
* Future directions in Korean film and television studies

We invite proposals from scholars, artists, writers, activists, and other practitioners. In particular, submissions that speak to the themes of the conference and expand scholarly and creative questions on Korean film and drama are of interest. Submissions that are creative, cinematic, and experimental are encouraged, along with traditional scholarly papers. We encourage interdisciplinary approaches but especially encourage presenters in the fields of media and cinema studies, Korean Studies, Asian American Studies, and other related fields to apply. We are particularly interested in presentations that interrogate race, gender, nation, ability and class with attention to media specificity and historiography along with symposium themes.
