This presentation analyzes the housing practices of Korean urban
middle-class women from a feminist perspective. In particular, it examines
the close relationship of gender to the field of speculative housing
practices. This study investigates the effects of Korean capitalism on the
housing practices of Korean urban middle-class women in structuring
patriarchal familialism and reinforcing gender inequality. To do so,
in-depth interviews were conducted with 36 women from December 2017 to
October 2019 to investigate their housing history. The women interviewed
were aged 40 to 80, were from upper-middle-class backgrounds with college
degrees, and owned their own homes in the Seoul metropolitan area. To
understand the multi-layered meanings of homeownership within their
historical context, aspects such as purchasing a home, moving in, and
living in their new homes were examined.
Sihyun Choi is a lecturer at Yonsei University in South Korea, who
researches feminist methodology, and the intersection of class and gender
in the formation of the contemporary Korean family. Her research has
focused on how gender norm constructs Korean upper-middle-class women’s
housing practice as a speculative thing. She is the author of Gender and
the Korean housing market(부동산은 어떻게 여성의 일이 되었나), published by Changbi in
2021.
