Assistant Director, East Asian Studies Center, The Ohio State University
The EASC Assistant Director serves as the principal liaison for faculty, students, other campus units and external organizations for major East Asian Studies Center (EASC) programs and EASC-based fellowship programs (e.g., Title VI). With the EASC director and other EASC faculty, the EASC Assistant Director takes a leadership role in directing, coordinating, and administering major EASC programs; plans and manages the preparation of reports and funding proposals; prepares budgets and monitors expenses for EASC-based grants; ensures compliance with all applicable regulations; and provides oversight for EASC, Institute for Chinese Studies (ICS), Institute for Japanese Studies (IJS), and Institute for Korean Studies (IKS) program budgets. With the EAS Graduate Studies Committee, the program director participates in identifying and implementing policies, procedures, and services for the EAS M.A. program. The program director also develops and oversees the maintenance of high-quality publicity materials designed to showcase the excellence of the East Asian programs associated with EASC and OSU. The administrative duties of the program director include ensuring fiscal compliance, supervising EASC program managers and support staff, interviewing, hiring, and training.

Job Duties:
Direct, coordinate, and administer academic programs, such as the EAS Interdisciplinary MA program and its mid-career professional track, Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Chinese Cultural Studies, and the EASC FLAS and other fellowship/scholarship programs; and work with EASC director and EASC faculty to develop and manage new programs.

Lead development, approvals, hiring, set-up, and publicity for EASC-supported language courses (e.g. Cantonese), area studies courses (e.g. Korean e-School), and teacher training courses in conjunction with the College of Education and Human Ecology (e.g., Global Teacher Seminar); work with language consortia of which EASC is a member.

Publicize and promote EASC programs by serving as editor-in-chief of the annual EASC expOSUre print newsletter; publish annual EASC directory; develop and print EASC brochures and other publicity materials; oversee EASC's website.

Plan and manage the preparation of funding proposals; lead biannual Title VI NRC/FLAS and other reporting processes; direct the Center’s data management and analysis to demonstrate its effectiveness and assist with evidence-based decision-making.

Direct and control program operations, maintaining accountability of resources and program results, particularly as lead liaison to U.S. Department of Education, ensuring that grant requirements and budgetary guidelines are met.

Prepare, manage, report budget; provide fiscal oversight and approve expenses for all EASC and institute accounts; and support EASC director in strategically cultivating potential donors and manage gift acknowledgement process.
Interview, hire, train, and supervise staff, student assistants, and other associates; conduct orientation for new faculty leadership; and coordinate staff meetings and teambuilding activities.


Required qualifications: Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; considerable knowledge of education administration and principles; considerable experience in program planning and administration; excellent interpersonal, communication, research, organizational and project management skills; excellent English skills.

Desired qualifications: Ability to work both independently and in close cooperation with others; knowledge of or interest in East Asia.

The target hiring range for this position is $58,100 - $75,000 annually.
