Introducing the "Next Generation Scholarship in Korean Studies" Conference:
Call for Undergraduate Research Papers


*Deadline: July 8, 2022*

The GW Institute for Korean Studies (GWIKS) is calling for papers for our
undergraduate research conference “*Next Generation Scholarship in Korean
Studies.*” The selected student authors will be invited to present at the
conference at George Washington University in Washington, DC from *September
16 to 17, 2022.*

Drawing from a variety of academic disciplines and subject-matter
specializations, this conference will be an opportunity for undergraduate
students to present their original research in Korean Studies .* Papers can
be on any topic related to Korean Studies.*

GWIKS will select up to 20 students (up to 10 in the humanities and up to
10 in social sciences) to present their papers at the two-day conference
hosted at George Washington University. Selected students will be provided
with round-trip airfare to Washington DC along with shared hotel
accommodations from September 15 to September 18. A panel of judges will
select three winners in each category (humanities and social sciences)
based on the quality of their papers and presentations.
Eligibility

This conference is open to undergraduate students currently attending a
college or university in the United States or Canada. Up to twenty (20)
papers will be selected based on originality and feasibility, with the goal
of having the presentations incorporate a broad range of topics. Finalists
will be announced by July 29, 2022 and the authors will submit their final
papers by August 31, 2022.

Selected students will be asked to submit a paper between 10 to 15 pages in
length (including any footnotes/bibliography) . Papers previously submitted
for coursework may be used for the conference as long as the paper is an
original work by the student.


Prizes

At the conclusion of the conference, a panel of judges will select the
winners based on the quality of their papers and presentations. The top
three (3) winners in each category (humanities and social sciences) will
receive the following prizes:

*1st Prize - Round Trip Airfare to Korea and one week of hotel
accomodations. *
* Note: Travel arrangements will be finalized in November 2022 and winning
students will need to complete their travel during the 2022-2023 Winter
Break*

*2nd Prize - Samsung Galaxy S21 *

*3rd Prize - Samsung Galaxy Tab S8*

Submission Information and Deadlines

*Please submit an abstract between 300 and 500 words outlining the scope of
the proposed paper, along with a CV, statement of motivation (one page) and
contact information (name and email address) for two references
to gwiks at gwu.edu <https://t.e2ma.net/click/438eih/obwd9snc/sm3hr2> by July
8, 2022, *and indicate “2022 Next Generation Scholarship Conference
Application – [Full Name]” in the subject line. The statement of motivation
should describe the applicant's interest in Korean studies, how they came
to write their research paper, and what they aim to accomplish by
participating in the conference.

Please include your category of submission [Humanities or Social Sciences]
in the body of the email. Humanities disciplines include (but are not
limited to)  history, literature, film, theatre, media and cultural studies,
philosophy, and religion. Social sciences discplines include (but are not
limited to) sociology, anthropology, political science, geography, and
economics.

Winners will be announced by July 29, 2022 and selected students must
submit their final papers by August 31, 2022.
