Arizona State University
The School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies (SHPRS) at Arizona State
University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible Assistant Professor in
History with a specialization in modern Korean history (19th and 20th centuries). The anticipated
start date is August 2023.
The successful candidate will have a tenure home in SHPRS and will teach in-person and online
courses on the history of modern Korea and Asia and as required by the undergraduate and
graduate programs. We welcome applications from scholars working in all specializations, with a
preference for candidates whose work engages one or more of the following themes: science and
technology, colonialism and empire, migration and diaspora, or race and ethnicity.
The successful applicant will be encouraged to work in collaboration with other ASU faculty
members to (1) foster Asia-focused research at the university across its many Schools and in
concert with the Asia Center and (2) to sustain and build a robust undergraduate curriculum in
Asia studies in connection with degree programs in SHPRS (Asia Studies) and the School of
International Letters and Cultures (SILC), as well as minors and certificate programs in Korean
Studies and related fields.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in modern Korean history or related discipline by the time of appointment
• Evidence of research excellence
• Demonstrated teaching capacity in modern Korean history and related societies and histories of
Asia
• Evidence of proficiency in the Korean language
Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: science and technology,
colonialism and empire, migration and diaspora, or race and ethnicity
• Evidence of successful teaching experience
• Demonstrated success in meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to
diverse communities
