Dear colleagues,

We are looking for panelists to join our panel proposal for AAS2024
conference in Seattle
<https://www.asianstudies.org/conference/call-for-proposals/?gclid=CjwKCAjw-7OlBhB8EiwAnoOEk_OLVc2zVrg5HFQ4ACBJzEMrJmHHmpznBA7YWHscRvmR2HMxSIw05RoCTtMQAvD_BwE>
(March 14-17, 2024).

Our panel is provisionally titled “Politics of Cuteness in East Asia” and
below is our abstract-in-progress:

Cuteness, commonly referred to as "kawaii" in Japan and "aegyo" in South
Korea, has emerged as an influential aesthetic in East Asia. If early
studies of cuteness connected it to innate biological responses, recent
scholarship considers cuteness as malleable and ambiguous, capable of
mediating various contemporary relations and dynamics as well as blurring
the boundaries between subjects and objects. This panel aims to explore the
politics surrounding cuteness, shedding light on its intersection with
culture, power dynamics, and identity construction in various Asian
contexts.

We invite papers related to any aspects of cuteness in East Asia (and could
be convinced to expand the geographical focus), such as local inflections
of cuteness, gendered aspects of cuteness, “authority cuteness,”
commodification of cuteness, cuteness as an affective register, etc.

If interested, please send a brief bio and a 250-word abstract to
yoonjung.kim at uni-tuebingen.de and fed0renk0 at snu.ac.kr by July 25.

Thanks,

Yoonjung Kim (University of Tübingen) and Olga Fedorenko (Seoul National
University)
