With generous support from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of
Korea and the Academy of Korea Studies (AKS), the Korean Studies Program at
Goethe University Frankfurt will host the “Diversity in/and Korea”
conference on June 6-7, 2025. The primary objective of this conference is
to unpack and explore “diversity” within the context of Korea—practically,
legally, and discursively—recognizing that the meaning of the term has
become both fraught and highly contextualized. We are particularly
interested in examinations of Korean culture, history, and/or society that
apply critical and intersectional analyses of power and power relations in
Korea and beyond. We welcome proposals for papers and panels that engage
with the following suggested topics. However, papers and panels addressing
any theme related to the core conference focus will also be considered.
*Suggested Topics:*
· Multiculturalism, both as a discourse and as public policy,
including the formation and lived experiences of “multicultural” families.
· Im/migration and im/migrants: Policy, settlement patterns and
experiences, local responses, transnationalism.
· Ethnic enclaves in Korea and Korean spatial formation abroad (aka.
Koreatowns).
· Representation of under-represented and/or minoritized social
groups: LGBTQ, ethnic/racial minorities, gender/gender identity, disabled,
the working-class or poor, elderly, etc.
· Cultural productions: The impact of diverse ideas, populations, and
mediums in shifting Korean cultural productions, popular and otherwise.
· Korean ethnicity and identity: What does it mean to be ethnically
and/or culturally Korean in a postindustrial and globalized Korea?
· Food and Foodways: Diversification of Korean food domestically and
abroad through migration, globalization, and mass media.
*Submission Guidelines:*
Proposals: Abstracts (up to 400 words) and panel proposals (up to 1,500
words) and a brief bio (up to 150 words) including contact details by
January 15, 2025; acceptance notifications by January 31, 2025; full papers
of 6,000-8,000 words due by May 23, 2025.
Please submit all individual papers/bios or panels/bios as one long PDF to:
ksgu.fra at gmail.com
This conference aims to produce an edited volume or a journal special issue
with selected papers.
The organizers will provide three-night accommodation (June 5-8) and
half-board (June 6-7) to presenters whose papers are accepted.
*Organizers:*
