[KS] Japanese and the Sokkuram Buddha

Dear all:
Here is a question from David Parker, a University of Chicago
graduate student:

"... I am enrolled in a Buddhist art history class, and am trying to
research a curious question. I have heard from 2 different Korean
sources a tale about the Sokkuram Buddha. They say that there is
'evidence' that the Japanese altered the architecture of the grotto
during the occupation in order to block the statue's "view" forward --
toward Japan -- in an effort to neutralize the figure's spirit. I have
been able to find exactly nothing on this question, and wonder if
you know anything. ...I wonder if you might post this note to the
Korean Studies e-mailing list, to see if someone in the wide world might
have a lead. I'd appreciate it."

Where does this story come from?
