Hello Everyone,

This thread on Korean childbirth culture has been so
helpful and therapeutic. This was the best one ever
since the dog-eating thread. It is really good for
Koreanists to address questions like this and share
their expertise in public.

By the way, given the medical character of this
particular thread, we might also want to revisit that
poignant post about how Koreans consume children's
liver as a cure. What sort of cultural connection can
we make here?

Both my Korean wife and I were touched to see how
respectful and knowledgeable these Koreanists are
toward the plight of so many Korean women. My wife,
Susie, agrees totally and told me a few stories of her
own. (Before we were married her name was Sook Ja
Kim-Pak. I offered to let her keep her original name,
but she said no.)

Besides, I got to meet a long-lost friend of mine.
Peter, is that really you? I haven't met you since
that night in Itaewon. How are you?

We both were understandably shocked by what we have
read so far-- the gruesome hospital practices of
binding (Is this somehow related to the foot binding,
the Asians used to do??) shaving (How dehumanizing!!)
straight jacket, not washing for weeks after
childbirth (Maybe third world women are
used to this kind of practice), making women walk
right after childbirth (Can you really believe
that?)

((Henny, my wife asked me just exactly what the male
organ is that is very much like a vagina and hurts
like hell when cut with a knife. But I wasn't
sure. Could you help me out there?))

By the way, we could not believe the message that
criticized Henny for his ethnocentrism. As he
clarified repeatedly, he is married to a Korean
woman! How could he be enthocentric when he lives with
an expert??? Besides, his Korean wife HELPED him to
write that post!

Needless to say, we are following this thread with
great attention and look forward to what else these
Koreanists are going to write.

Finally, I was also delighted to read the support and
vindication given to the American and European medical
systems, especially the white female researcher who is
about to give birth and considering flying out of
Korea
for that. (Good luck with her!) God knows that when I
visited Korea to pick up and marry my fourth wife, it
was almost impossible to fill my prescription for
anti-psychotic medications. May I join you all in
this
celebration of the greatness of world-saving Western
medicine where women are FREE to choose!

Sincerely,

Micky Girardi
with help of my wife Susie "sookja" Girardi)
