A side note from Japan: The NHK television Korean language
instructional series (at least was the last time I noted it) has as
part of its title "hanguru kouza." They carefully avoid the use of
either "kankokugo" or "chousengo" on the program in order to keep the
two camps of Koreans in Japan off their backs. Probably due to that, I
have been hearing the Japanese (not on television) use the term
"hanguru" to refer the Korean language itself and not just to the
script for at least the last eight or nine years.

I wonder if I should change the title of my spring course here to
"Hiragana/Kanji Literature." (And maybe some of my Shakespearian
scholar colleagues should be teaching in the Department of Alphabet.)
