We were in Korea, so I didn't read this discussion until it was pretty
well finished. Most of the people who participated in the discussion are
probably too young to know that in the 1970s the Department of
Preventive Medicine of Yonsei University did quite an extensive study of
childbearing behavior in Korea. You might like to read about it:

Dorothea Sich and Kim Young-key, A study on the childbearing behavior of
rural Korean women and their families. Transactions of the Royal Asiatic
Society, Korea Branch, 1978, 27-57.

At the time most Korean women (at least in the countryside) chose to
have their children at home attended only by their mothers or
mothers-in-law. The study goes into the good and bad sides of both the
modern medical approach and the traditional approach to childbirth.
