The University of Michigan
Korean Studies Colloquium Series Presents:

Andre Schmid
Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies
University of Toronto

"Korea Between Empires, 1895-1910"

Thursday, February 1, 2001, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

1080 South University
International Institute, SSWB #1644

After Korea became Japan's Protectorate in 1905, Korean writers could not
prevent key nationalist concepts and images from being co-opted into
Japanese colonial ideology. How to sustain certain styles of nationalist
self-critique, without being co-opted, became a vital intellectual and
political problem in the anti-colonial resistance.

Refreshments will be served.
