An additional note on the subject of hair and politics?
The phrase "Stuck a feather in his cap/ and called it macaroni" in the
song "Yankee Doodle" was a slighting, British reference to the hairstyles
of the American colonials. A "macaroni" was a very fancy continental and
British "do." By a nice performance reversal, that phrase, like the term
"Yankee," which also started out as a disparaging, British term, took on a
jaunty, defiant air in the song sung by the colonial troops.
