Dear List Members,

The SOAS Korean Studies Graduate Students' Convention
will take place this May 11-12, during the same week
as the 3rd London Korean Festival.

The convention will be a good opportunity for students
from around Europe to present their latest research
and meet socially. We will be able to provide travel
grants to a number of presenters.

If you are interested in attending I would appreciate
it if you could reply to ksgsc2005 at yahoo.co.uk as soon
as possible, stating your name, contact details,
university, subject area and probable paper title. The
deadline for submitting abstracts is Thursday March
10.

I would also be very grateful if you could forward
the call for papers below to any colleagues,
friends or students you think might be interested.
Apologies if you receive this e-mail more than once.

Best wishes,
Owen Miller
(SOAS)

Korean Studies Graduate Students’ Convention 2005:
SOAS, University of London

First call for papers

The Centre of Korean Studies at the School of Oriental
and African Studies (SOAS), with the support of the
Korea Foundation, will host a two-day Korean Studies
conference for graduate students studying in Europe
this May. The convention will take place at the same
time as the 3rd London Korean Festival, which includes
a film festival, music concerts and a series of
lectures.

Dates: May 11-12, 2005

Location: School of Oriental and African Studies,
London, United Kingdom

Travel: SOAS will be able to provide travel bursaries
for a number of presenters.

Accommodation and meals: SOAS will provide one night's
accommodation for all presenters who do not live in
London and require it. For those wishing to attend
without presenting a paper SOAS will be able to
provide information on budget accommodation in the
area. The organisers will also provide a buffet lunch
and light refreshments for all those attending as well
as one evening meal for all presenters.

The KSGSC 2005 aims to be an event where graduate
students from around Europe can come together to
present their work and share ideas and experiences. At
last year’s graduate students’ convention at Ruhr
Universitaet Bochum, Germany, participants agreed that
there was a clear need for this sort of event. While
Korean Studies is a subject area of growing importance
in Europe, it was recognised that there is a lack of
communication among young scholars, who will form the
next generation of teachers, researchers and Korea
specialists. We hope that this year’s KSGSC will
provide the impetus to turn this event into a regular
annual or biennial meeting of graduate students in
Europe.

If you wish to present a paper at this conference we
would like to ask that you reply to this e-mail as
soon as possible stating your name, contact details,
university, subject area and probable paper title so
that we can gauge interest. An abstract of not more
than 500 words should then be submitted by March 10,
2005. We welcome abstracts from graduate students in
all Korea-related fields. The conference is open to
applicants from outside Europe but when selecting
presenters preference will be given to students
studying at European universities. Those wishing to
attend without presenting a paper are also welcome –
please e-mail us your contact details. Applicants will
be notified of whether they have been accepted by the
end of March.

Abstract guidelines:
MS Word, Times New Roman, 12pt, single spaced, max.
500 words.
Please include at the head of your abstract: your full
name, e-mail address, university, subject area and
paper title.
