Rick,

Yes, not sure if it's specifically people who are relatively close
for conference/seminar invitations you're seeking, but there are lots
of scholars working in English in Korean film in addition to those
who have been mentioned thus far. Among specialists who now are in,
are from, or have worked in North America are (and forgive me if I
have current locations wrong):

Aaron Magnan-Park, University of Notre Dame
Brian Yecies, University of Wollongong
Hye-Seung Chung, University of Michigan
Chris Berry, University of London (Goldsmiths College)

You may also wish to check out the following recent anthologies,
which will give you leads on several more, including Koreanists who
specialise in other disciplines but occasionally write on film:

NEW KOREAN CINEMA (2005) edited by Chi-Yun Shin & Julian Stringer.
Edinburgh University Press: hardback (ISBN 0748618511), paperback
(ISBN 074861852X) 234 pp. Published in the US by New York University
press: hardback (ISBN 0814740294), paperback (ISBN 0814740308).

SOUTH KOREAN GOLDEN AGE MELODRAMA: GENDER, GENRE, AND NATIONAL CINEMA
(2005) edited by Kathleen McHugh and Nancy Abelmann. Wayne State
University Press: paperback (ISBN 0814332536) 248 pp.
