Brother Anthony's sad news brought me back to my Fulbright year in Korea (1967-1968) when I had the good fortune to meet and spend a little time with Ch'a POm-sOk. I had translated his short play _SOng-nan Kigye_ the previous year studying with Bill Henthorn at Princeton, and, subsequently, I published a translation of another of his short plays in the Korea Journal.

While my fellowship was ostensibly to study modern Korean theater, I found myself most often in the company of poets rather than playwrights. Ch'a sOnsaeng was the exception. He was so down-to-earth, full of life, and not taken with himself that he was both approachable and memorable. I will always remember him warmly and find it sad that the world has lost such a mensch.

Members of the list might want to know that the veteran playwright Cha Bum-suk died on June 6. An obituary
