Abstract:
My paper is a reflection on “communities” of the ‘Poor’ during two periods in recent Korean history – the era of rapid urbanization from the 1960s to 1980s and in post-1997 financial crisis Korea. Drawing upon interviews, participant-observation, and textual analysis conducted in a former shantytown (taldongne), in a “shantytown museum,” and with members of an online group for the unemployed, I explore the ways that community among the poor was and is imagined, built, and sustained.
