not at all--you misread my meaning. i
actually agree with your assertion that cultural interpretation is at
play whether one is heritage or non-heritage, native speaker or not. i
was not asserting, as you seem to believe, that heritage interpreters
are more valuable than non-heritage interpreters, and nowhere did i make such a claim. far from it. i
simply wanted to emphasize that, labor-wise, ladder-rank literature
professors are protected whereas language lecturers, who provide just
as valuable a function to such departments, are not. a recent mla
report focuses on this very hierarchical structure within language and
literature departments. i don't think it's a controversial point.
