In Vietnamese 'quoc ngu' (romanized script), 'ong' (with a circumfex over
the o) is very commonly used as an age appropriate form of address. In other
words, it's simply the way of saying you to elders. Although I don't have my
Han-Viet dictionary with me, I believe it is also quite likely the
same Chinese character.
