Dear Colleagues,

The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies is pleased to announce the fourth Kyujanggak International Symposium on Korean Studies, to be held August 25-26, 2011 here at Kyujanggak, Seoul National University. The conference theme is "The Project of Modernization: Reconsidering the Capitalist and Socialist Roads, 1945-1970s." (근대화 프로젝트: 자본주의의 길, 사회주의의 길).

Following the precedent of previous symposia, the plenary panel will be devoted to the main conference theme, but for the remaining panels, we invite proposals either on the conference theme or on other critical issues in Korean Studies. Panels can be conducted either in English or Korean, or both; although individual paper proposals will be considered, we strongly urge anyone interested in taking part in the symposium to set up or join a panel.

Panels should consist of four to five presenters including the chair, and panel organizers are responsible for bringing together all the abstracts and applying. Panel proposals - including title and short introduction to the panel, together with abstracts of papers and short CVs of the organizer and panelists, should be sent to icks at snu.ac.kr by February 10, 2011. Panel organizers will be notified by mid-March on the outcome of the selection process. All presenters of selected panels will be reimbursed for their travel to Seoul (up to USD 1500) and will receive free lodging and meals for the duration of the symposium. Final papers should be sent by June 30, 2011. For further information and questions, please contact the International Center for Korean Studies at Kyujanggak: icks at snu.ac.kr or (+82)(0)2-880-9378.
