The Faculty of East Asian Studies of Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, is 
seeking to appoint a

*Junior Professor for Society and Culture in East Asia (**assistant 
professorship, 3+3 years, no tenure track, **W1 salary bracket)*
to start at the earliest possible date.

The successful applicant will represent the subject area of "Society and 
Culture in East Asia" in research and teaching. He or she must have 
proven ability in the Social Sciences or Cultural Sciences and be able 
to convey cross-regional and cross-cultural perspectives in his or her 
teaching. An excellent command of at least one East Asian language is 
essential.

Ideally, part of the courses taught by the successful applicant should 
complement and expand the M.A. programme in "East Asian Politics".

Applicants should have a university degree and be holders of a PhD with 
a very good dissertation, which as a rule should have been gained within 
the last five years. Applicants with a post-doctoral lecture 
qualification (Habilitation) cannot be considered. There is no upper age 
limit. Only a German citizen or citizen of a European Union country can 
be employed as a civil servant on a fixed-term contract.

Further requirements include:

      the willingness and proven ability to attract outside research funding

    *

      the ability to work across disciplines and to cooperate on joint
      research initiatives

    *

      university teaching competencies and a strong commitment to teaching
