[KS] (...)Finishing Touch on Chinese character education...Harvard Kirogi’s Linguistic Journey West at SNU

Hi,

I hope some of the list members will find the following
material of use.

It covers my more recent Korea-experience as well
as a personal "Finishing Touch" on Chinese character
education.

I have included the full content of the website KoreanYes.com
and the materials relevant to Common-Chinese, as well as the
십배사전(educator edition) I and I-VII, as well as the full Common-Chinese
data.

It is hoped that those interested in using the material for
non-English version would be able to use the included data
in creating their own local version of Ten-fold dictionary for the
advancement of Korean Studies in their respective languages.

I also wonder if it would not be possible to form an academic
cooperative centered on Common-Chinese based East Asian
language study material development, building on the unique and
significant "delayed learning of Chinese character" experience of
Hangul-only education in Korea, to be applied to language education
of not only Korean but also Chinese and Japanese, with of course
focus on
1) delayed learning of Chinese characters,
2) incorporating corpus linguistics data from Chinese, Japanese, and
Korean in language study material
3) Combining the experiences from phonetic-centered vs. character centered
education of Common-Chinese and East Asian languages with Korean, China
and Japan standing as case studies.

Even though this is my own finishing touch, it would be a great
relief if sufficient interest could be found in Koreaweb.ws list members
to form such a cooperative effort come to being at the finish line.

The earlier "Finishing Touches," as the linguists amongst
the list members well know, are the two dominant, and seemingly
unreconcilable strains in modern Korea.  As a
personal matter, I think it is appropriate and even important,
in the Korean context, that both of these two views continue to
maintain their lively activity.

Still, it is hoped that the experiences incorporated
into Shipbai Sajun could serve as a compromise point, or
a middle road, that both two factions could accept as a point
of reconciliation

우리가 Lydia Liu, Federico Masini, Michael Lackner 분들의 저서를 보면서 못 얻는 게 있습니다.
바로 이분들의 저서 내용이 학문적이기에 추상적인 면을 피할 수 없고 또 다루는 내용이 하도
광범위해서 분석/해석 중심 글에서 벗어나기는 힘든 일입니다.  눈에 띄는 자료라고 할만한
것도 극도로 소수이라고 하겠습니다.


아래 자료들은 얼마 전 만 해도 찾거나 보기 힘든 자료였습니다.  하버드, 버크리, NYPL,
콜럼비아, 캠비리지나 예일 대학 도서관에 직접 안 가고는 볼 수도 없었던 자료들이었습니다.

참 좋은 세상 아닙니까? 크릭만 하면 되니...

먼저, Gale 사전의 중요성은 다들 아실 겁니다.  저도 이 사전을 Harvard 에서 처음 봤을 때 약간의
disconnect 를 느꼈습니다.  내가 아는 말들은 다 어디 간거야?라며 놀랬던 거지요.  순 한국어의
끈끼와 내구성은 여기서도 볼 수 있고, 우리 언어/지식체계가 얼마나 변한지도 이 자료를 통해 볼
수 있습니다.

조선 말기의 한국어이지요..엄청난 변화가 있었다는 걸 체험할 수 있는 기회입니다,

다음 두 저작이 바로 21세기 편 New Terms for New Ideas의 바탕 자료이자 inspiration(영감/*靈感*
)들입니다,
먼저, 이 저자들은 당시의 학자분들 답게 적어도 Latinist는 되고 3/4개국어에 능통하셨습니다..
또, 이분들의 중국어/구어-문어 실력을 능가할 수 있는 현대분들도 몇 안 될 겁니다.

이것도 무엇을 알고 무엇을 모르냐에 따라서 그 내용의 의미가 있든가 없든가 하고 변합니다.
한자를 모른다면 영어만 보고도 무엇이 뜻 되는지에 대한 감은 잡힐 겁니다.  중국어/한자만
안다면 반짝만 보이는 겁니다.  하지만 이분들 눈에는 다 보이고 있습니다. 별 말씀은 없어도
말입니다. 타당성, 합리성, 일리, 1대1 대칭...
