Hello,
Those who plans to visit Portland area in May, I would like to invite
you to a Korean/Japanese art lecture.
Dr. Ho Tae Jeon will present a lecture and slideshow titled “Koguryo
Tomb Murals and Japan in Ancient East Asian Funeral Arts” at Portland
State University on May 19, 2011, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The
presentation will take place in room 238 of the Smith Memorial Student
Union, and is sponsored by PSU’s Center for Japanese Studies.
Dr. Jeon, a visiting affiliated Scholar of the Korea Institute at
Harvard University, and Professor at the University of Ulsan in the
Department of History and Culture, is the author of /Goguryeo: In Search
of Its Culture and History/. He is a former curator of the National
Museum of Korea, and has published numerous articles on Goguruyeo tomb
murals and ancient Chinese art.
According to Dr. Jeon, “Koguryo tomb murals were introduced to Japan by
monks and craftsmen of Koguryo. Murals of Takamatsuzuka may have been
drawn by immigrants of Koguryo and Japanese painters,” which is evidence
of the close connection between the two civilizations at the time.
Koguryou tomb murals are registered as “UNESCO World Heritage” and
represent an important part of Korea’s history and cultural heritage,
and perhaps of Japan’s as well. To learn more about the tombs, see
UNESCOs beautiful presentation, available online at
whc.*unesco*.org/uploads/activities/documents/activity-275-1.pdf
Dr. Jeon’s visit is sponsored by the Center for Japanese Studies at
Portland State University, in collaboration with the Institute for Asian
Studies. For information about other events visit the Center’s website
and www.pdx.edu/cjs, or Junghee Lee at dilj at pdx.edu.
Best wishes,
Junghee Lee
