"New
Perspectives on Korean History: the Role of Elite Descent Groups."
Abstract:
The central
question the talk intends to address is: Who were the agents who moved Korean
history forward over centuries? Recent research has concentrated on a
reevaluation of the role of elite descent groups in shaping the social and
political environment in which the Korean polity developed and matured. Retracing
the evolution and transformation of the Korean indigenous descent group through
time and space and across dynastic boundaries will highlight the persistence
with which kinship ideology permeated all aspects of public and private life
from Silla (ca. fifth century) to late Chosŏn (nineteenth century). The
proposition that the pre-modern Korean society was a kinship-based society has
important implications for understanding and interpreting Korean history.
