With deep sorrow we have received the news that our esteemed colleague
and good friend Daniel Bouchez, honorary member of the Association for
Korean Studies in Europe, has passed away at the age of 85. He came to
Korean Studies relatively late, after teaching philosophy for thirteen
years in Korea, but was an active member of AKSE from its very first
meeting in London in 1977. From 1986 to 1988 he served as AKSE
President. Because he only turned himself into a Korean Studies scholar
when he was in his early forties, he decided to concentrate on a
relatively narrow field, the literary works of Kim Manjung, a strategy
that proved very productive. He soon established himself as an authority
on Kim Manjung and proposed innovative ideas, which sometimes challenged
mainline Korean scholarship. Another major achievement, of wider scope,
was his adaptation of Cho Dongil's multi-volume history of Korean
literature through the ages, of which he was the co-author rather than
just the translator. The book, which easily might have turned into a dry
enumeration of authors and genres, is remarkable for the consistently
interesting arguments it presents and the fluency of its style, which
make it a delight to read. Daniel Bouchez represented the best of
European Korean Studies scholarship and we count ourselves lucky to have
had him in our midst. Our thoughts go to his wife and son who have to
bear this great loss.
