[Reminding] Academic Director of the Hanmun Workshop at the Jangeogak Archives, the AKS

The Jangseogak Archives at the Academy of Korean Studies is seeking an
academic director of the 2016 Hanmun (literary/classical Chinese) Workshop
(July 4th to July 22nd 2016). The Jangseogak Archives is
a prestigious national library and research institute of traditional Korean
sources (http://intl.aks.ac.kr/english/viewforum.php?f=81).

The main purpose
of this workshop is to support and train aspiring young scholars (graduate
students and junior scholars) of Korean studies. Through an intensive
three-week course (six hours per day, Monday through Friday) on a carefully
selected pre-modern Korean classical text, the participants will be instructed
on how to read and translate into English classical/literary Chinese sources.

This workshop will
focus on one particular text or a collection of sources derived from the
Archives. Apart from the reading and translation of a selected text, the
participants will also write introductory articles on a list of fifty carefully
selected texts from the Archives.

The academic
director of this workshop will lecture on the reading of the selected text
(three hours per day), help the participants translate their readings into
English (three hours per day), and participate in the weekend explorations of
historic sites related to the text. Apart from the round-trip airfare (economy
class; excepting those residing in Korea) and a room at the Guesthouse of the
Academy, the honorarium of 7 million WON (approximately, 5,940 USD) will be
provided. 

Applications
should include a statement of purpose (no more than two pages) on how to teach
Hanmun (literary/classical Chinese) for graduate students of pre-modern Korean
studies and current CV with a list of publications (no more than three pages)
by February 24th, 2016 (6 pm: Korean Time). The final results will be individually
notified by March, 7th, 2016.

2. Applicant Qualifications: 

- Scholars in the various fields of the humanities and the social
sciences who have well-developed research interests in pre-modern Korean (or
related area) studies 

- Ph.Ds from universities/research institutes with research experience
in Korean or related studies (For ABD applicants, Ph.D required by the time of
appointment)

-Expected period of stay is available from 6 to 10 months.

3. Obligations 

- The fellowship requires a full-time commitment; the recipient is not
eligible for receiving other fellowships in Korea during the same period. 

- The fellows should begin their research before August 31st 2016 at the
latest.

- Fellows are expected to participate in translation projects (Classical
Chinese into English) or team research projects to be conducted by the
Jangseogak Archives.

- Fellows are expected to present the results or findings of his or her
research at a seminar at the Jangseogak Archives in the AKS at least once
before the term of their fellowship is completed. 

4. Funding and Benefits

- Airfare: round-trip economy (only for the fellows; excepting those who
reside in Korea) 

- A stipend of 2,500,000 won per month (the fellow should reside at the
Academy at least fifteen days each month to be eligible)

-50 % discount for accommodations (Guest House) at the Academy
