Degree and area of specialization:
Ph.D. required with specialization in East Asia (preference for contemporary Korea or Japan); field experience in East Asia and competence in at least one major East Asian language required.
 	 
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
We seek an East Asianist highly committed to administrative work and familiar with research and teaching. We strongly prefer candidates with a demonstrated record in academic administration, grant writing, and fundraising. Familiarity with Title VI National Resource Center and FLAS fellowship programs preferred. The successful applicant must also possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills to manage the Center for East Asian Studies large constituency and various administrative responsibilities, and to work with key partners at the University and in the community.
Principal duties:

Working under the Faculty Director and the Steering Committee, the Associate Director works with another staff member, the Assistant Director, to perform these duties:

60% Program Development and Implementation
-Assist the Director in the formulation of the Center's ongoing vision, strategic plans, and year-end evaluations.
-Assist the Director in ensuring the Center's compliance with all regulations of its grants and awards, particularly the Title VI National Resource Center and FLAS fellowships grants, as related to reporting, accounting, and data on impact and evaluation.
-Manage the Center's programs and projects to strengthen the teaching and learning of East Asian languages and area studies, including promotion and oversight of the Center's undergraduate certificate and Ph.D. minor.
-Collaborate with other area studies centers at the University and network with other East Asian Studies programs nationally and internationally.
-Seek sources of internal and external funding, including governments, foundations, and donors, and write grant proposals and reports, including the future Title VI National Resource Center and FLAS proposals, in consultation with the Director, the Steering Committee, and the University as appropriate.

20% Administration 
-Oversee the Center's daily operations; print, online, and social media communications for internal and external audiences; and management of the Center's budget. 
-Work with the Assistant Director and supervise student employees in event management and outreach activities. 
-Represent the Director and the Center in meetings, committees, and events on and off campus, as appropriate.

20% Instruction and Student Support
-Teach 1-2 undergraduate lecture courses and undergraduate or graduate seminars on East Asia each year as assigned, according to need. 
-Advise undergraduate and graduate students about the Center's undergraduate certificate and PhD minor programs and other educational opportunities.
-Sit on thesis and dissertation committees, as needed.
-Maintain a vibrant cultural and intellectual community for undergraduate and graduate students in East Asian Studies.
