To those with an interest in Korea and Korean history near Leeds, UK...

Just bringing to your attention an upcoming visit of Professor Mark Caprio of Rikkyo University, Tokyo to our University on the 6th of March, 2019. Professor Caprio is an expert in the Korean colonial period and will present on the Ukishima Maru incident of August 22, 1945, when a ship returning interned and enslaved Koreans to their homeland unexpectedly veered off course and exploded. The reasons for this incident are still unknown and have fuelled political reverberations in the contentious politics of memory between Korea and Japan.

If you enjoy a bit of debate about Japanese right-wing parties or 'pseudohistories' from either of the Koreas, or how cinema and the arts can fill gaping documentary gaps left by destroyed colonial archives, this may be an event you wish to attend or recommend to students or members of the public.

"Investigating Tragedy at Sea: The Ukishima-maru Incident and its Legacy," Wednesday 6 March, 16:30-18:00, G23 Lecture Theatre, 28 University Road (formerly Geography East), University of Leeds, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, LS29JT, West Yorkshire, UK
