Kay E Black died peacefully July 5th at home in San Francisco at age 92. She was predeceased by her husband Andrews D Black in 2010 and is survived by three daughters, their spouses and two grandchildren.
As sad as we are at our mother’s death, it is with great excitement that we, her daughters, announce that prior to her death, her long awaited book, Ch’aekkori Painting: A Korean Jigsaw Puzzle, was published.

Kay’s interest in ch’aekkori began on a trip to Korea in 1973. This encounter led her to a master’s degree in art history at the University of Denver, further studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, and eventually to a fortuitous meeting with Edward W Wagner of Harvard University.  Beginning in the 1980s, Kay devoted herself to her research of ch’aekkoripainting and conducted worldwide research of extant works, more than 150 in all, in numerous collections. She also collaborated with Wagner and other Korean scholars and eventually published several scholarly articles on Korean art including two ground-breaking works on ch’aekkori.  After Wagner’s death, Gari Ledyard of Columbia University helped in completing the genealogical research started by Wagner, complementing Kay’s analysis of Korean and Chinese books depicted in ch’aekkori screens. In addressing art historical concerns in ch’aekkori, Kay successfully demonstrated that there were three distinct types, which she called Isolated, Trompe L’Oeil and Still Life and explored their intricate relationships with Chinese and European paintings. Her book, with numerous illustrations, pieces together crucial information regarding Korean ch’aekkori and provides a comprehensive understanding of the subject.
