Call for Applications - 2020 Kyujanggak Summer Workshop and Hanmun Workshop

 

1. 14th Kyujanggak Korean Studies Summer Workshop, 2020

 

  This summer the Kyujanggak Institute of Korean Studies will host its
fourteenth summer workshop for Korean studies. The workshop aims to give
graduate students in Korean studies or Korea-related subjects the
opportunity to further their understanding on research trends in various
fields of Korean studies. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, it will be
conducted via online (ZOOM) from June 29 to July 17, 2020.

  Lectures will cover research methods, trends, and approaches in about 24
different fields: history, history of science, mass media, classical
literature, modern linguistics and literature, gender history, philosophy,
religion and education, art, relationship with North Korea, etc. SNU
faculty members and prominent scholars from global community will be the
lecturers. After 90 minutes of each lecture, there will be an opportunity
for discussion. Lecture and discussions will take place in Korean or
English. Students who attend more than 15 lectures will receive a
certificate.

2. The 8th Kyujanggak Hanmun Workshop 2020

 

The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies will host its two-weeks
intensive hanmun workshop this summer. This workshop is for graduate
students who have completed at least one year of classical Chinese
course(s) and are interested in improving their reading comprehension of
classical hanmun texts. Since classes will be conducted in Korean, students
are expected to have at least intermediate-level proficiency in Korean.
Concerning the COVID-19 related situations, this year’s workshop is for
students who are staying in Korea during the workshop period.

  The workshop will last two weeks from July 6 to July 17, 2020. It
consists of 2-hour long seminars in the afternoon from Monday to Friday
each week. The seminars mainly focus on the participants’ translation of
hanmun texts either at an elementary level or an advanced level. Therefore,
in addition to class hours, students will spend at least 10 hours a week in
preparing the assigned translation of hanmun texts. Graduate students who
want to read hanmun texts at a more advanced level for their research may
request an interview with professors in a specific field.

  In order to apply, a reference letter is required. Please ask your
academic advisor to send a reference letter for you to icks at snu.ac.kr by

  Those who have participated in the Kyujanggak summer/hanmun workshop
during the past three years are not eligible to apply.
