This talk showcases the potential applications of word embedding—the
representation of words as vectors—in the study of modern Korean
literature. The first half shows how natural language analysis (NLA), using
the Word2vec (word-to-vector) algorithm, can elucidate changing meanings of
the term “munhwa” (culture) in a popular 1930s magazine. The second half
examines natural language generation (NLG), specifically the use of neural
network-based artificial intelligence to generate Korean language sentences
similar to poems, lyrics, dialogues, and short stories.

Jae-Yon Lee is an associate professor of modern Korean literature at the
Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in South Korea.

Nam-Gi Han is a postdoctoral fellow of informatics at the Ulsan National
Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in South Korea.
