15th Kyujanggak International Symposium on Korean Studies, 2022

Call for Papers

Since 2008, the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies has held its annual Korean Studies Symposium. This Symposium allows for both in-depth discussions of specialized topics and exchanges with specialists in many other areas of Korean studies.

For the 15th annual meeting (Nov. 3-4, 2022), we plan to host seven to eight sessions as well as keynote speeches. We invite panel proposals and/or individual papers in any field of Korean studies. We are particularly interested in innovative and cross-disciplinary proposals that seek to discuss key issues in the field, including the current taste of the field and future prospects for Korean studies. Broad East Asian perspectives including China and Japan are also welcome.

Preference will be given to research that is not yet contracted for publication; papers can then be considered for publication in any of the journals published by Kyujanggak, i.e., Seoul Journal of Korean Studies (SCOPUS/ESCI), Hanguk Munhwa (KCI), and Kyujanggak (KCI). We also plan to publish edited volumes based on selected conference papers. Two edited volumes from the 13th Kyujanggak International Symposium (2020) are expected to be published this year by Routledge (eds. by Joanne Cho, Lee Roberts, Gooyoung Kim and Sang Hwan Seong).

For submission, please use online application form on the ICKS website (icks.snu.ac.kr). The abstract submission is due by July 31, 2022. In case of panel proposals, please submit a proposal (500-word abstract in Microsoft Word) and the information about the composition of the panel (the names & contact information of 4-5 presenters, the titles of all presentations, the CV’s of all presenters, and the names & contact information of 2 discussants).

In case of individual papers, please submit an abstract (500-word abstract in Microsoft Word) and the presenter’s CV.

This year, the Symposium will take a hybrid format of in-person and Zoom conferences. The applicants whose papers (individual or panel) are accepted for in-person presentations will be invited to Korea. The travel & lodging support for the in-person presenter will be up to one million Korean won per person depending on the port of departure. This holds for both selected individual presenters and panel presenters. The applicants need to specify either 'in-person presentation' or 'zoom presentation' in the application.

For those who would like to be considered for travel support, an unpublished paper (at least 10 pages with font size 12) will be required to submit along with their applications.

In case of zoom presenters, the presentations will be pre-recorded and they will be uploaded on the Kyujanggak ICKS website prior to the symposium. From Nov. 3 to Nov. 4, 2022, there will be live Zoom discussions for zoom panelists and zoom individual presenters.

The presenters who are accepted to the symposium and who would like their papers to be considered for the Symposium’s edited volumes should submit a full paper (approximately 6,000-7,000 words) by October 10, 2022. Those whose full papers are accepted will have additional time to revise the first versions after the Symposium.

The notifications for accepted individual and panel presenters will be sent before September 15, 2022. The conference will take place on November 3-4, 2022 (Thurs.-Fri.) at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies.
